Sowing and Reaping

October 28, 2009 By: Don Marsh Category: Meditations, Observations and Experiences, Podcast

What have you put into your business? I know that when you feel desperate and don’t know what to do to get your business off the ground, all you can think of is what you can get OUT of it. But starting a small business is not a free ride. It’s like riding a bicycle: You start riding up hill, not going very fast, working very hard, and it takes a while until you can coast!

I am not alone in believing that giving can lead to receiving. Listen to this economist talk about what his research has revealed!

  1. And even then ya can’t coast forever, great message, thanks
Don, we’ve been inching our way up the hill it does take persistance, i’ve been thinking of calling on some window sign artists to see if they would be able to refer some of their messy work when it’s time to redo them

Are you doing residential work at all? This is the hot time for houses! Check with Molly Maid or one of these other big house cleaners who cannot do windows because their workers comp won’t let them. I just got a call from a MM referral yesterday…

Hey Don. I like your PRACTICAL advice about the sowing and reaping principle.
However, it really bugs me when you or quite a few others, insert these horn-tooting or loosely religious based anecdotes. If you’re going to stand on SOME principles and teachings of the Good Word, you should stand behind ALL of them. For instance, you say tithing is a Bible requirement. It was when the Mosaic Law was in force. It isn’t anymore(Romans 7:6,7; 10:4; Ephesians 2:15; Colossians 2:14). Christians are simply told in 2Corinthians 9:7 “Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Even if you’re motives were pure, I suspect your comments would come across to many readers that there is some magical, self-serving result that comes from giving or giving more. The whole spirit of godly giving is that you don’t expect some blessing to come back on you. It’s first out of love and appreciation, then because of the genuine happiness that comes from heartfelt giving.
Also, if the Scriptures even do support running for some political office(you didn’t say political, so forgive me if my assumption is wrong) why did you relate that to something negative- seeing a drop in income? Are you implying that it was a mistake to run for office because your business suffered? That the “quick-fix” was to give more than 10% of your income to get that magical blessing back? So maybe if you go beyond just the tithe in the future, the next year you can run and get elected???
I know that many more related topics can be derived from this such as “How do you know when your financial blessings are turning into another snare of the devil to distract you from what’s really important?
I really feel that merely having a form of religion doesn’t add any value to a discussion about how to be successful at making a living.

There is a lot here to deal with in the few minutes I have, but I will take a shot.

    1. It’s my blog, and I will say whatever I want if I think, in my opinion, that it will help. Take it or leave it. It’s your choice.

    2. The Bible would not have all these “if…then” promises as a rhetorical exercise. They are given for our benefit. If they trouble you, take it up with the author.

    3. Counting the cost is also a Biblical concept.

    4. I am not about to censor the beliefs that are highly relevant to ME when discussing how ~I~ make a living. I don’t talk about my faith often, so whatever “horn-tooting” you have to put up with is something that seldom happens here. Your intolerance annoys me, but I approved the comment for the sake of others who share your view.

  6. Hi Don,
Great vid you put out on sowing and reaping. Ive got a buddy who started in the window cleaning business one year after I did, with that lazy attitude you were speaking about: cheap fliers, cheap equipment, getting by on the minimum and where is he now…..back to working for someone else while im still self employed. If you sow to your business and your self you WILL reap in due time. I also liked you take on tithing. I tithe a 10% also. The subject of tithing in the bible is the only place where God says to “test him on this”. Great stuff thanks again.

  7. Having your own business is not for the faint of heart. You have to stick your neck out every day. Tithing is just one manifestation of that.

  8. Yea i think it’s great to give in god’s name whether you get any
reward or not, the reward is in your heart, but god will give back,
it is a right way to think don,
